Varun Arya dreamt of building an Institute at par with IIT or IIM in Jodhpur with indigenous efforts since 1999 and was encountering bureaucratic challenges.

But for more than two years he was battling with bureaucracy for the conversion and has paid Rs.60 lakh as conversion charges on March31, 2009. But after sic months GoR returned the cheque.

Two hours a social worker and aid of Rahul Gandhi came to enquire about the case and in three hours letter of approval was delivered to fasting Varun Arya.

His fight against corruption on Gandhian principles finally succeeded.

DU students to fast for change

The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) has asked the University administration to rectify the inherent flaws in its new admission process. The Union has put forward a list of demands which they claim can help solve such problems and have said they would go on 'fast unto death' if their demands are not met.

The student leaders want the University to provide forms online in the new admission process, increase number of seats in all colleges, decentralised sports quota admissions, and return DUSU's office to it.

"We have made these demands in a formal letter submitted to both the VC and the Proctor's office. If these demands are not met latest by April 18, we will go on an indefinite hunger strike," said Jitender Chaudhry, DUSU president.

On Wednesday, a group of IIT alumni from Rajasthan sat on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The group is led by Varun Arya, an alumnus of IIT Delhi. In 1999, Arya had decided to set up an educational institute under Marwar Education Foundation (MEF) in Rajasthan. For this, the Foundation decided to purchase 94.4 acre of land. Though they say they have made the payment for the same, the state government has still not allocated the land to them. "We are on an indefinite strike since morning to fight against the corruption. The government has told us they want 40 percent of the land for their official use. But we have refused to accept it," said Arya.

Fifty-one-year-old Varun Arya along with his wife and students of Aravali Institute of Management in Rajasthan has been fasting at Jantar Mantar here since Wednesday to save the institute from closure.

Mr. Arya, who runs the institute, is awaiting conversion of the land, on which a permanent campus is to be built, for use from agricultural to educational purposes. The institute is at present operating from rented buildings and “faces closure by July unless it moves to a permanent location”, says Mr. Arya.

Mr. Arya, who has been trying to get the Rajasthan Government to convert the land use, claims that he has not succeeded as he is unwilling to pay a “bribe”. Efforts frustrated, Mr. Arya decided to fast at Jantar Mantar in a bid to “bring the national spotlight on the issue”. The institute is under the Marwar Education Foundation. An IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad graduate, Mr. Arya, who belongs to Rajasthan, said he was invited by the State Government to do something for Rajasthan. “I quit my comfortable job and returned to Rajasthan to build an educational institute. I purchased a barren piece of land since there were insufficient funds,” said Mr. Arya, adding that he had transformed the barren land completely by adding several lakes and trees.

“For conversion, I paid the necessary charges but still the government did not convert the land. There have been attempts to arm-twist me and unsavoury tactics have also been used,” he said.

Over 2,000 individuals, including IIM and IIT alumni, have signed a petition asking for conversion of the land.
